Offset printing and gravure printing, two of the most common printing processes in the industry are mainly used in the production of books, magazines, mail-order catalogues, newspapers, packaging, and wallpaper. Other goods include: business forms, financial documents, checks, maps, and company memo pads.</p>
<p>According to the <a href="http://www.bls.gov/oco/cg/cgs050.htm">US Bureau of Labor Statistics</a>, the printing business is prominent in many urban cities, such as New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis, Washing D.C., and Philadelphia. <p>A contemporary type of printing process is known as digital printing. Also referred to as variable data printing, this practice is one of the newest and fastest growing segments in the printing field. <p>I remember the first time I got one of &#8220;those&#8221; calls.<br />
<em>Years before Adobe&#8217;s Creative Suite emerged, when Quark was still king.</em></p>
<p>I was reminded of those days yesterday by a fellow member in the Linkedin Forums and I want to share what I&#8217;ve learned through trial and error and from being in print production myself.</p>
<p>Here are a few questions I <em>demand</em> you ask your print provider before you start your sign design. Trust me, having the answers in mind while laying out your design will keep the Tums away.</p>

<h2>Sign Design Questions To Ask Your Print Provider</h2>

<li>What color mode should my images, illustrations and layout be created in?</li>
<li>Is there a specific icc profile I should use?</li>
<li>Do you have a pms chart printed on my sign&#8217;s material you can provide me? If not, will you supply me with a test print of my pms colors on that material?</li>
<li>What resolution should my images be?</li>
<li>How much of a bleed should my layout have?</li>
<li>Do I supply you with the fonts, embed it in the pdf settings or turn my type into outlines + rasterize the type layers?</li>
<li>What file format should I use when saving my file for submission?<br />
Would you prefer a native application file or a pdf?<br />
If a native application file, what, if any, compression is required?<br />
If pdf, what PDF Preset should I use?<br />
Are there any settings I should change within the pdf options box?</li>
</ol>
<p><strong>Knowing the <a title="Large Format Graphics" href="http://vistaimaginggroup.com/large-format-graphics/">printing specs</a> will make a world of difference when designing your sign.</strong></p>

<h3>Some Added Advice</h3>

<p>Every printing device <a title="Large Format Graphics" href="http://vistaimaginggroup.com/large-format-graphics/">prints signage</a> differently, depending on variables such a device type, ink type, paper type, room temperature, the age of the material, the age of the ink. Ask for a new test print of your pms colors each time you start a project.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>A great way to avoid a 5ft by 4ft surprise is to obtain a test print for color and quality before the full size version prints.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Always evaluate the test print in the same manner the sign will be displayed. For example, if the final sign will stand at eye level, tape it to a wall and stand in front of it. If the sign will be displayed further away, such as a billboard, tape it to a wall and back up as much as possible. If your sign will be hung outdoors, don&#8217;t evaluate the colors under fluorescent lighting. Test it out either outside or in a temperature controlled light box set to 6000K.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Flatten your transparencies yourself. No one gets your vision more than you do. Don&#8217;t have that vision compromised. Flatten yourself, inspect the differences and change as necessary. Some print providers have graphic designers on hand, some don&#8217;t.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>When scheduling the turn around time from design conception to sign installation, be sure to factor in waiting time for test prints.</p>

<p>One-way window clings create privacy while still allowing in light.  It&#8217;s a non-adhesive film that clings to almost any surface, easily repositioned and perfect for visual merchandising.</p>

<p>Vinyl decal film is a semi permanent solution with a gloss finish. You&#8217;re unable to see through the graphic so the colors are bold and brilliant.</p>
<p>Clear vinyl decal film has a unique translucent appearance.</p>
